gelaTINYcube

Is a solo project I made to get into my game design program. It’s no doubt the project that made me learn the most out of any, since at that time, I had no previous experience with the Unity game engine nor with coding.

Features & proposed experience

The game is a simple platformer in which you control a small gelatin cube going from point A to point B.

It presents challenges to the player with different traps and contraptions. Theses obstacles forces the player to move accordingly and to tighten up his grasp over the controls and behaviors of the avatar’s movements.

There is a size system to make the gelatin cube get bigger. Once it’s big enough, it can absorb enemies that we’re previously deadly to the player. But beware, you could become too big to go through small spaces!

As a designer

This project taught me how to use plenty of what Unity has to offer and my love for level design.

I learned the different pipelines of Unity’s graphics such as : Base, URP and HDRP. In this shot, you can see that I also learned how to use the Shadergraph tool to make my own lava VFX.

I made myself familiar with particles systems in many different cases. In this shot, you can also see that I used light probes to render the red light projecting on different surfaces such as the cavern walls and leaves.

I really enjoyed the process of level design in a 3D environment. I found myself drawn to saturate every little corner of the game with visual storytelling and extensive details such as vegetations, rocks, particles, light sources, etc…

I familiarized myself with UI’s and menu’s. In this shot, I applied a menu to a 3D scene to make it more appealing for the player and present the environments the player will likely come across.
